Secrets of the green-keeper's art (April 2009)

Preparing and maintaining greens makes all the difference on the golf course - as Bridgwater College's sports turf students discovered.

The College held an event as its Cannington Centre offering aspiring golfers first-hand experience of what it is like to be a green-keeper. Activities included learning to drive a green mover, hole changing, cutting turf with a hand mower, as well as discussing the career paths and courses available which focus on the industry.

Young golfer James Sewell said: "I didn't realise how much care is taken when preparing a green. I was surprised at how much attention is given to the use of chemicals to avoid damaging the environment."

The group also competed in a tournament on the 18-hole golf course. Cannington juniors took first and second place - Jason Bryant won with a score of 59. He was presented with a Titleist golf bag and the winner's trophy. Dan Mackenzie came second with a score of 64.
Sports turf programme manager Will Bowden said: "This event helped to show the young golfers how studying a subject like sports turf management can help them achieve a fantastic work/play balance."
